Get Your Flu Shot
September 9, 2016
Beginning September 12, the Apple Valley Medical Clinic will offer flu shots to patients and non-patients Monday through Friday. Appointments are available and required. Walk-ins will be accommodated based on appointment availability.
Flu Shot Recommendations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone over the age of 6 months receive a flu shot. It takes two weeks for the flu shot to start providing protection.
Vaccine Protection: Flu vaccines are designed to protect against four influenza viruses that experts predict will be the most common during the upcoming season. The four-strain formula is available for ages 6 months through 64 years.
High-Dose Vaccine: Fluzone high-dose vaccine is available this year for patients 65 and older. It is delivered by the traditional injection. The High Dose contains the three flu strains most likely to cause illness for the current flu season. The High Dose contains four times the amount of antigen of regular flu shots, boosting the immune response even more in persons getting the vaccine.
According to the CDC, “Human immune defenses become weaker with age, which places older people at greater risk of severe illness from influenza. A higher dose of antigen in the vaccine is supposed to give older people a better immune response and therefore better protection against the flu.”

FluMist is not available this year as the CDC is not recommending this vaccine for the 2016-2017 influenza season.
