Get Your Flu Shot!
Beginning August 24, the Apple Valley Medical Clinic will offer flu shots to patients and non-patients 7 days a week!!
BY APPOINTMENT OR WALK-IN:
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 8 p.m.
Vaccine for infants: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend flu shots for anyone over the age of six months. Currently, the Apple Valley Medical Clinic does not have the vaccine for infants. As soon as that arrives, the clinic will begin vaccinating infants against flu, as well.
Vaccine protection: Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the three influenza viruses that experts predict will be the most common during the upcoming season. This season the selected strains are:
- A/California/7/09 (H1N1)-like virus [pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza virus]
- A/Perth /16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus
- B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus
High-Dose Vaccine Available: Fluzone High-Dose vaccine will be available this year for patients 65 and older. Like other flu vaccines, it contains the three flu strains most likely to cause illness for this flu season. High-Dose vaccines, however, contain four times the amount of antigen of regular flu shots, boosting the immune response even more in persons getting the vaccine.
According to the CDC, “Human immune defenses become weaker with age, which places older people at greater risk of severe illness from influenza. Also, aging decreases the body’s ability to have a good immune response after getting influenza vaccine. A higher dose of antigen in the vaccine is supposed to give older people a better immune response and therefore better protection against flu.”
